Setting up Adaware
Downloading, Installing, and Using Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spybot is an anti-adware/anti-spyware utility. It removes unwanted programs that may slow down your computer, or steal your personal information.
These screenshots are based on Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (sp2). Your screens may not be the same as you see here.

| STEP 1 Go to http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html STEP 2 Scroll down until you see the blue "Download here" buttons. Click on the top "Download here" button. |

| STEP 3 The next page will show several download options (scroll down if necessary). I would recommend the Download.com mirror if it is available, if not use the BN Fileforum |

| STEP 4 Click on "Download Now". |  |
| STEP 5 A popup box will appear asking you what you want to do with this file. Click on "Save" to save the file to your computer. |  |
| STEP 6 Choose where to save the file. Make sure to remember where you saved the file. |  |
| STEP 7 After the file has finished downloading, you can click on the "Run" or "Open" button. |  |
Installing Spybot |

| STEP 8 After clicking on "Run" (or double clicking on the file) a popup box may appear, asking you if you are sure you want to run this program. Click on "Run". |  |
| STEP 9 A box will popup. Choose which language you would like to use during the install. |  |
| STEP 10 A new box will appear, welcoming you to the setup program. Make sure to close other programs before continuing Click "Next" |

| STEP 11 Read the license agreement, and if you agree to the license agreement, Click the button next to "I accept the agreement". Then click "Next" |

| STEP 12 The setup program will now ask where you want to save the program files. The default location is fine. Click "Next" |

| STEP 13 The next screen will now ask what options you would like to have in the program. If you do not have a blind person using the computer, leave "Icons for starting blind user mode" unchecked. If you do not need other languages, uncheck "Additional languages". I would recommend unchecking "Skins to change appearance". Leave "Download updates immediately" unchecked, we will do that later. Click "Next" |

| STEP 14 The setup program will now ask where you want the start menu shortcuts to be created. The default is fine. Click "Next" |

| STEP 15 The next screen will ask about icons and permanent protections. Checking the box next to "Use sytem settings protection (Tea Timer)" will monitor your system and notify you of any changes to your system. Click "Next" |

| STEP 16 The setup program will now tell you that you are ready to begin installing the program and give you a list of the options that you have selected. Click "Next" |

| STEP 17 After the program finishes installing, another screen will ask you what you want to do. Leave both options checked. Click "Finish" |

Running Spybot for the first time |

| STEP 8 A new box will appear, read the information carefully. It means that some programs include adware to pay for their programs. Part of the agreement for using these programs is loading the adware to use the program. Some programs may stop working if the adware is removed. Click on "Don't show this message again" Click on "OK" |

| STEP 9 The main program will start, but another box should appear, asking you to create a registry backup. This is a good idea, so click on "Create registry backup". This process can take a long time, don't panic if it looks like spybot has locked up. Let the program finish before continuing. Once the backup is complete, click "Next" |

| STEP 10 The next screen will prompt you to search for updates. Click on "Search for updates" If updates are found, the "Download all available updates" button will light up. Click on it to download all of the updates. When it is done updating, click on "Next" |

| STEP 11 The next screen asks if you want to immunize the system. This is a good idea, especially if you just updated, so click on "Immunize this system" Click on "Next" |

| STEP 12 Next spybot will tell you that the initial settings have been done. If you want to read the tutorail or help file, click on that button. Click on "Start using the program" |

| STEP 13 You will now be at the Spybot main screen. Click on "Check for problems" |

| STEP 14 Clicking on "Check for problems" in the last step should automatically start spybot checking for problems. If a scan has not started, click on "Check for problems" |

| STEP 15 Once the scan is complete, it will show what items it has detected. Any items in red are critical and need to be taken care of. These items will be automatically checked. Any items in green or black do not need to be taken care of. Leave these unchecked. Click on the "Fix selected items" next to check for problems. |

| STEP 16 A box will popup, asking if you are sure you want to remove these entries. Click "Yes" Once it has removed the entries, another box will popup, telling you how many objects were removed. Click "OK" |

| STEP 17 If a box pops up telling you that some items couldn't be removed, Spybot will need to run at startup to remove these items. Click on "Yes" to allow Spybot to run the next time you start or restart windows. |

| STEP 18 The next screen will show the results of the removal. Any items with a green checkmark have been removed. If there are items with red checkmarks, they should be removed when Spybot runs at the next startup. Click on "Immunize" on the left. |

| STEP 19 If a box pops up telling you that all known bad products are already blocked, click on "OK". You can now close the program. Remember to update and run the program often to keep your computer free of adware/spyware. If the box pops up telling you that additional protections are possible, click on "OK". Then click on the Green Plus at the top next to "Immunize". Once all bad products are blocked, you can now close the program.
